Fennel is warm in nature and pungent in taste, belonging to Yang and attributed to “Fire” in the Five Elements. Fire governs warming and upward movement, matching its effects of warming the stomach to dispel cold and regulating qi to relieve stagnation, helping Yang qi transport and harmonize internal cold stagnation.
I Ching
From the perspective of the Book of Changes, fennel is warm in nature and can warm the stomach to dispel cold, similar to the Fire over Lake (Kui) Gua. In the Kui Gua, the upper trigram is Li (Fire), and the lower trigram is Dui (Lake).
